Your Guide To Theme Parks In Orlando

1) Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World is not just one theme park but four – comprising the Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot and Hollywood Studios

Magic Kingdom

Size: 105 acres

Usual opening hours: 8am-12midnight

Ticket prices: Varies on the day. Price per day for two days from $104.50, plus tax

Main rides/attractions: The original and arguably still the best! This is a family-friendly park set around the fairy-tale Cinderella’s Castle, which is the focus of the famous night-time firework display, Happily Ever After, amazing parades and fun rides for all. The most popular rides include Big Thunder Mountain, Space Mountain, Toy Story Mania, Pirates of the Caribbean and Peter Pan’s Flight.

Tips for visitors: If you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary, visit guest relations and pick up a free badge for you and members of your party. Wear the badge and you may get special treatment!

Animal Kingdom

Size: 500 acres

Usual opening hours: 8am-10.30pm

Ticket prices: Varies on the day. Price per day for two days from $104.50, plus tax

Main rides/attractions: The new 12acre land of Pandora – The World of Avatar is where most people first head for. The amazing land is inspired by James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster – the highest grossing movie at $2.7billion. Take the fantastic Flight of Passage ride and you can enjoy an unforgettable aerial tour on a banshee in an amazing 3-D simulation. Also popular is Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain, Kilimanjaro Safaris and the Festival of the Lion King show.

Tips for visitors: Take the Kilimanjaro Safaris in early morning or late afternoon, when there are more animals about and the light is better for photos.

Size: 300 acres

Usual opening hours: 9am-9pm

Ticket prices: Varies on the day. Price per day for two days from $104.50, plus tax

Main rides/attractions: Epcot showcases life and culture in 11 countries. Rather than dramatic roller-coasters, it has more educational and technological attractions. Its top attraction is the Frozen Ever After boat ride in the Norway pavilion in the fictional world of Arendelle. This is definitely worth a FastPass reservation, as it gets very busy. The Soarin’ around the World simulated hang-glider ride, the Test Track car simulation and the Spaceship Earth story of communication are also very popular.

Tips for visitors: If you can attend Epcot during one of its festivals – the 2018 Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, from 1 April-28 May, or the 2018 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival, from 30 August-12 November 2018 – you’ll have even more to see and do.

Hollywood Studios

Size: 135 acres

Usual opening hours: 9am-9pm

Ticket prices: Varies on the day. Price per day for two days from $104.50, plus tax

Main Rides/attractions: Shrink down to the size of a toy at the new ToyStory land, which opens on 30 June 2018. Among new rides will be Slinky Dog Dash, a roller coaster Andy has assembled from his Mega Coaster Play Kit, and Alien Swirling Saucers, a galactic play set won from Pizza Planet. Among other popular rides is Toy Story Mania! Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and For the First Time In Forever Frozen Show.

Tips for visitors: If you have kids aged 4-12 who like Star Wars, register for the free Jedi Training to understand the ways of the Force and put their skills to the test against the Dark Side – but you have to do on the day before the show on a first-come basis.

2) Universal Orlando:

Much like Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando includes a selection of theme parks and water parks – and there are currently rumours that Universal is set to open a fourth park in Orlando!

Universal Studios

Size: 107 acres

Usual opening hours: 9am-10pm

Ticket prices: from $124 per adult for one day

Main Rides/attractions: Universal Orlando is the home of Harry Potter. Among must-experience rides is Harry Potter and the Escape From Gringotts at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Other highlights include the exciting motion ride, Transformers: The Ride 3D and the action-packed rollercoaster, Revenge of the Mummy.

Tips for visitors: To really feel like Harry Potter, buy an interactive wand that allows you to cast spells around the park. You can buy them at Diagon Alley.

Islands of Adventure

Size: 101 acres

Usual opening hours: 9am-10pm

Ticket prices: from $124 per adult for one day

Main Rides/attractions: The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man 3D simulator is as amazing as its name suggests. Two more incredible rides are Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and the Hogwart’s Express. Roller-coaster fans will love the Incredible Hulk Coaster, while those seeking adventure should try Skull Island: Reign of Kong.

Tips for visitors: Universal Rider Switch is great idea for families with small children at height-restricted lines. One adult waits for others in the party in a designated area with the child who does not want to ride. Once they have finished, the waiting adult and one or more people can by-pass the stand-by line, while the other adults take their turn to stay with the child.

Volcano Bay

Size: 53 acres

Usual opening hours: 10am-8pm

Ticket prices: from $80 per adult per day

Main Rides/ attractions: The new water theme park is based on a story of native islanders, the Waturi, who discovered Volcano Bay. On searching for the mythical golden fish Kunuku, they were guided to Volcano Bay, adding amazing slides and experiences that use and celebrate water. Fun rides include the Krakatau Aqua Coaster with four-person canoes though the volcano, the Ko’okiri Body Plunge, a 70-degree, 125-foot fall through a drop door, Kala & Tai Nui Serpentine Body Slides and Punga Racers, a kids’ favourite, featuring manta ray mats through underwater sea caves.

Tips for visitors: Use a TapuTapu waterproof wearable specifically designed for the park to hold your place in the Virtual Line for one attraction at a time.

3) LEGOLAND Florida

Size: 150 acres

Usual opening hours: 10am-6pm

Ticket prices: One day from $74.99 per adult when bought online in advance

Main Rides/attractions: The fantastic 4D, Lego Ninjago the Ride, in which you battle baddies with your bare hands, The Dragon and Coastersaurus roller coasters, Lego Driving School for young drivers or the Boating School are among the most popular in the park.

Tips for visitors: Feltrim’s luxury Balmoral Florida Resort is just 15 minutes from LEGOLAND Florida.

4) SeaWorld Orlando

Size: 279 acres

Usual opening hours: 9am-8pm

Ticket prices: from $79.99 per adult when bought online one day in advance

For a more relaxing time, take in one of the two Shamu killer whale shows, One Ocean or Ocean Discovery.

Tips for visitors: Phone out of battery? SeaWorld has two free charging stations near the Nautilus Theater and between the Antarctica area and the Dolphin Theater, although you will need a U.S.-compatible plug.

5) Discovery Cove

Size: 15 acres

Usual opening hours: 7:15am (for 9am opening) until 5:30pm

Ticket prices: Varies in season, but from $230 for dolphin swim and day resort per person
